Hanine Roussel,
Giulietta Simionato: How
Cinderella Became Queen, Baskerville, 1997
This excellent
biography of the great diva was originally published in Italian in 1987 under
the title Come Cenerentola Divenne Regina.
The author met with
Simionato and the reader is presented with a comprehensive insight into her
early life and career as well as someinformation on her personal life and
many tributes by colleagues and admirers. The book gives many contemporary
reviews of her performances as well as a chronology of her role debuts and
complete performance chronology, as well as detailed information
in regards to her
discography. With kind permission of the publisher, Baskerville, some of this
material had informed the
information on this
site, though the book contains much more detailed information and many
beautiful photographs otherwise unavailable. The book also includes an
astounding CD with arias from live performances that Simionato chose herself.
It is a wonderful tribute.

Lanfranco Rasponi,
The Last Prima Donnas, Knopf, 1982
Rasponi's book is an
invaluable source for anyone interested the art of singing. It contains over
fifty interviews with
some of the greatest
singers of the past. The interviews focus on their careers as well as their
opinion on how the medium has changed and the voices of today (apparently
Caballe is the only soprano of the proceeding generation that the majority
of these Prima Donni approved of). Some
of the interviews appeared in the OperaNews
magazine and were later expanded and others
added for the publishing of the book.
Simionato's own
interview covers her remarkable departure from the lyric stage, the
differences that one encounters in the teaching and production of opera
singing today, her early years, her voice, her opinion on her roles, offers
of soprano roles, her opinion on other singers and other anecdotes. The
interview shows a remarkably keen mind and a sensitive and thoughtful
attitude.
Other singers
represented in the book range from the mega-stars; Flagstad, Tebaldi, and
Milanov
To less commercially
celebrated greats; Adami-Corradetti, Favero, Pacetti
And everyone in
between; Stignani, dal Monte, Cigna, Caniglia, Penderzini, Oltrabella,
Swarthout, Bori, Seefried, Streich, Modl Cerquetti and Roman. Even if you
don't recognise the name or know the voice, each interview is extremely
insightful into the female operatic voice.
The book is no longer
in print but second hand copies abound and can be found at that ABE books,
the greatest source for second hand and out-of-print books on the internet.
