Reviews
"La Simionato found
herself in her element, and gave an exemplary performance. Her voice was
soft, sonorous, moving, with full and easy high notes; in her interpretation
she was a Valentine who was impassioned and aggrieved, certainly to be
ranked amongst the very greatest portrayals she has given us in the span of
her career." Rodolfo Celletti, Cetra.
"...a revelation -
wholly magnificent. Her singing was secure, clear, classical, and seemed to
be enriched by warmth, by generous expressiveness, purity and intensity."
Luigi Pestalozza, Stassera, May 29,
1962
Anecdotes
Les Huguenots had not
been seen at La Scala for sixty-three years before this major revival, which
engaged five of the world's greatest singers. Critics and audience were
unanimous in their praise, marking the event as a triumph in La Scala's
history. It also marked Simionato's debut in a soprano role. As the reviews
reproduced above demonstrate, it was a significant accomplishment.
