Reviews
April 1954 "She was
magisterial from the first to the last scene. Her rich vocal quality (colour,
volume and emission) was accompanied by a perfect style. The audience applauded
warmly and at length." Diario de Noticias,
April 23, 1954 [Note: this was her role debut]
October 1960 "There is no
finer mezzo in the world today...the richness of the Simionato voice carried the
third act to triumph." Robert Marsh, Chicago Sun Times,
October 15, 1960
"An ongoing performance history of Eboli began only fifty years ago, with the
two pioneering productions that helped bring Don Carlo into the standard
repertory: Margaret Webster's Metropolitan Opera staging during Rudolf Bing's
first season, in 1950, and, eight years later, the famous Giulini/Visconti
production at Covent Garden. The Eboli in each case was Fedora Barbieri, who
sang the part in many other theaters throughout the decade.... It was a
blockbuster approach carried on by another frequent Met Eboli, Irene Dalis, and
later perfected by Giulietta Simionato, whose easy top and experience with
florid Rossini roles gave her interpretation a measure of refinement that her
colleagues lacked." Peter G. Davis,
OperaNews, January 2002
Anecdotes
It is important to note the relationship
between Simionato's Eboli and the Vienna State Opera where she sang the role
every year for eight consecutive years beginning in 1958 and ending in 1965,
retiring at the beginning of the following year.
Her performances of this opera in Salzburg
under Karajan (1958) were given without preliminary rehearsals as La Simionato
had just finished a run Norma in Lyon.
Her 1960 La Scala performances of this opera
were her only in Italy and the critics were unanimous in their praise, awarding
Eboli to her as one of her greatest roles.
